January 31, 1942 – December 1, 2020
Born in McCamey, Texas to Willard J. Cowen and Gara Nan Plummar Cowen January 31, 1942. Sandra lived in Rankin, Texas for the first 14 years of her life. From a very young age she dreamed of becoming a nurse. As life sometimes changes courses for us, her dreams were put aside for a while. In 1956 Sandra married and moved to New Mexico. Three sons were born of this union. James Alfred, Floyd Carl, and Louis Ray Sanders.
In 1970 Sandy went to work as a nurse aide just to see if she “really wanted” to be a nurse. She did. She returned to school and graduated with honors in 1973. After working as an LPN for 16 years, Sandy decided to return to school and graduated in 1988 as an RN. Sometimes we take the long way around but our dreams never die. We can strive to make them happen.
Almost the entirety of her career was devoted to labor, delivery, post partum and newborn nursing. She also worked E.R and O.R but her true love was mothers and babies. She became certified as a child birth educator and as a midwife and when it came time to retire, she realized she could not give up her love. She became a certified lactation educator and continued assisting mothers and babies and was employed by Luna County Parents as Teachers.
Sandra met Lonnie Dawson in April of 1987 and married in 1989. Celebrating 31 years of marriage on April 15, 2020.
She is survived by her husband Lonnie, of the family home, her 3 sons Jimmy, Floyd, and Louis Sanders, 6 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, 3 brothers Sam, John, Sherrod Cowen and many, many nieces and nephews
