Mary Isabel Trammell Roeschke passed away peacefully at home on January 9, 2021 at the age of 99. Mary was born in Peacock, Texas, on December 23, 1921 and moved to New Mexico with her family when she was 9 years old. She lived here ever since. After high school and business college, Mary worked for the New Mexico Legislature in Santa Fe, then the Department of Education, and later the Land Office. This is when she met her future husband, Conrad “Connie” Roeschke, at the La Fonda Hotel. They hit it off from the start, were married 8 months later, and enjoyed marriage for 49 years until Connie passed away in 1995. In the early years of their marriage, both worked at Los Alamos where Connie was an electrical engineer. Mary worked as a secretary there, typing memos and getting signatures from some of the most notable names in nuclear physics (Robert Oppenheimer, Enrico Fermi, Hans Bethe, Niels Bohr, and others). Mary and Connie had two sons, Frederick Conrad and Erich Karl Roeschke. Among her earlier interests, Mary was active with the League of Women Voters, enjoyed square dancing, and visited local Indian pueblos. She later became a school bus driver for special-education students. Mary always showed a caring spirit and interest in other people. Mary is survived by her brother Donald Trammell and her sister Jeanne Barlow, her sons Frederick and Erich, five grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. A private service is being held by the immediate family.
