Obituary

Ethel Estelle Battishill, 96, a resident of Silver City, NM entered eternal rest Monday, May 17, 2020, at Skies Healthcare Center in Albuquerque, NM. She was born April 25, 1924, in Hurley NM, and lived in Grant County all her life. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Bright Funeral Home. A private burial will be held at a later date. Ethel was a very kind and loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, sister, grandmother and friend. She never had an unkind word to say about anyone. Ethel’s hobbies were sewing, gardening and crocheting. She took joy in making clothes for her children and making afghan blankets for family and friends. For many years she crocheted and donated many afghan lap blankets for patients at Fort Bayard State Hospital. She enjoyed baking; lunch and dinner were not without dessert. In their 20s and 30s, Ethel and her husband Dean were members of a local square dance club which was one of their favorite pastimes. In her early 40s, Ethel was diagnosed with debilitating Muscular Sclerosis (MS) and square dancing and other strenuous activity was no longer possible. She didn’t let MS get her down. She studied to learn as much as was known about MS, and made nutrition and other life changes to deal with the illness. She was a source of inspiration and encouragement to others who suffered with the same ailment. Ethel remained active as long as possible in organizations such as Eastern Star and supported her husband Dean with his activities related to Amateur Radio. She was active in the family business serving as her husband’s bookkeeper at Peck Motor Company until his retirement in1982. She was a strong and spirited woman and she will be missed. She was preceded in death by her parents John and Estelle Hill, husband Dean, daughters Margaret Provencio and Deena Douglas, sisters Thelma Smith, Laurel (Polly) Shinn, and brother John (Jack) Hill. She is survived by her daughter Vickie Dickerson and her husband Randy, her son Robert Dean Battishill and his wife Becky, son-in-law Alvino Provencio, 8 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. The family has requested that donations be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or the American Heart Association.
